Match Review

New Zealand 38 British & Irish Lions 19

Published: Saturday 9 July 2005

With all the events of the last few days dominating everyone’s thoughts, trudging up to Eden Park last night for an effectively meaningless test match just failed to stir the passions as much as the previous weeks matches.

Depending on who you speak to this was either a fantastic spectacle of rugby or it was an absolute shambles. For my part I fall into the former category, I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at Eden Park and I was entertained from the word go.

Well the spin all week has been about Tana Umaga’s spear tackle on Brian O’Driscoll but the All Black captain has had the last laugh.

Manawatu 6 British & Irish Lions 109

A cricket score it may have been, but had the Lions not comprehensively defeated the local side then many searching questions would have been asked at the post match press conference.

New Zealand 23 British & Irish Lions 3

Well that was pretty disappointing all round really! The conditions inside the Jade Stadium last night were never going to be conducive to see some good running rugby from either side.

Southland 16 British & Irish Lions 26

So Gavin Henson gets dropped from the test side and comes out and puts in a heroic man of the match display against Southland.

Otago 19 British & Irish Lions 30

Well the tour is very much on track. With the exception of the Maori match, the Lions performances have been improving game by game and some individuals are finally beginning to stand up and be counted.

Wellington 6 British & Irish Lions 23

Five games down, two more to go before the first test in Christchurch and I think we finally have the names of some of those players on the test team sheet.

New Zealand Maori 19 British & Irish Lions 13

Published: Saturday 11 June 2005

Well, it was coming wasn’t it! The Lions haven’t learned from their mistakes and all those that have pointed out the obvious about the breakdown area have been convincingly been proved right. Again.

Taranaki 14 British & Irish Lions 36

Published: Wednesday 8 June 2005

It’s difficult not to label this Lions side as the midweek team but it is clear that this side is being used to try out those players who are less likely to make the grade into the test team in seventeen days time.
